Imam al-Syafii (rh) once said: "For everything that I have said, if there is an authentic hadith narrated from the Prophet (saw) that contradicts my opinion, then the hadith is more imperative and you should not follow my opinion." (Al-Zahabi, Siyar A'lam al-Nubala; 10/34, Beirut: Muassasah al-Risalah).
Imam al-Syafii (rh) also said: "If you find out that the content of my books contradict the sunnah of the Prophet (saw), then hold on to the sunnah and abandon my opinions." (Al-Zahabi, Siyar A' lam al-Nubala; 10/34).
Al-Humaidi, a major narrator of the hadith, (deceased in 219H) said: One day, al-Syafii (rh) narrated a hadith. I asked him: "Are you going to hold on to it?" He answered: "Do you think that I am from the church or that I am wearing the Christian waistband such that when I hear a hadith from the Prophet (saw), I do not hold on to it?" (Al-Zahabi, Siyar A'lam al-Nubala; 10/35).
Said Imam al-Syafii (rh): "Every hadith originated from the Prophet s.a.w is my opinion, even though you do not hear it from me." (Al-Zahabi, Siyar A'lam al-Nubala; 10/35).
Imam al-Syafii (rh) also stated: "It is a consensus among all humans that whosoever has been enlightened with a sunnah from the Prophet (saw), he is not allowed to abandon it for the opinion of someone among humans." (Ibn Qayyim al-Jauziyyah, 'Ilam al-Muwaqqi'iin, 2/263).
Imam al-Syafii (rh) declared that: "For every matter that I have spoken about, when there is a sahih (sound) narration from the Prophet (saw) alongside the ulama of hadith, I retract those statements while I am alive or after my death." (Ibn Qayyim al-Jauziyyah, 'Ilam al-Muwaqqi'iin; 2/266).
And seemingly to clear any lingering doubts, Imam al-Syafii (rh) also said: "When a hadith is sahih, then that is my mazhab." (Al- Zahabi, Siyar A'lam al-Nubala; 10/35).

On Sufis and Sufism
In Tarteeb al-Madaarik (2/54) by Qaadi 'Iyyaad (rh): "We were with Malik and his companions around him. A man from the people of Naseebeen said, 'We have a people called Sufis who eat a lot then they mention lines of poetry and then they stand up to dance.' Imam Malik (rh) asked, 'Are they children?' He said, 'No.' Imam Malik then asked, 'Are they possessed?' Again he said, 'No. They are elderly and usually sane (when they are not doing that).' Imam Malik then said, 'I never heard anyone from the people of Islam doing this.' The man then continued, 'Rather they eat, then they stand and dance. Some of them hitting their heads and some their faces.' So Imam Malik laughed and then stood up and went to his house. The companions of Imam Malik said to the man, 'You were fortunate with our companion since we sat with him for thirty odd years, (and) we never saw him laugh except on this day.'"
Imam Al-Syafii (rh) said: "If a person exercise Sufism (Tasawafa) at the beginning of the day, he does not come to Dhuhur except an idiot." [Talbees Iblees].
Imam Baihaqee (rh) reports in Manaqib Al-Syafii, "If a man becomes a Sufi in the first part of the day, by the time Dhuhur comes upon him you will find him crazy."
Imam Al-Syafii (rh) also said: "Nobody accompanied the Sufis forty days and had his brain return (ever)." [Talbees Iblees].
Ibrahim ibn Mawlid (rh) mentions that Imam Al-Syafii said, "A Sufi cannot be a Sufi unless he has four characteristics; he is lazy, he eats too much, sleeps too much with much excretion."
Imam Tartoushi al-Maliki (rh) was asked about the Sufis so he said, "The mazhab of the Sufis is futile, ignorance, misguidance and it is not allowed for anyone who believes in Allah and the last day to be present with them, nor to help them upon their baseless ways and this is the way of Malik, Abu Haneefah, Al-Syafii and other than them from the scholars of the Muslims and to Allah belongs success." (Tafseer Qurtubi 11/237/238)

Way of the Salaf
In the name of ALLAH, The Most Beneficent, The Most Merciful
"In the name of ALLAH, The Most Beneficent, The Most Merciful; Praise be to ALLAH, the Lord of the Universe; The Most Gracious, The Most Merciful; Master of the Day of Judgment; You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help; Guide us to the straight path, the path of those whom You have favoured, not of those who have deserved Your anger, nor of those who stray." (Al-Qur'an; Surah Al-Fatiha; Ayat 1-7)
"ALLAH! There is no god but He, The Living, The Self-subsisting, Eternal. No slumber can seize Him, nor sleep. His are all things in the heavens and on earth. Who is there that can intercede in His presence except as He permitteth? He knoweth what (appeareth to His creatures as) before or after or behind them. Nor shall they compass aught of His knowledge except as He willeth. His throne doth extend over the heavens and on earth, and He feeleth no fatigue in guarding and preserving them, for He is The Most High, The Supreme (in glory)." [Al-Quran; Surah Al-Baqarah; Ayat 255]
"Say: He is ALLAH, the One and Only; ALLAH is He on Whom all depend; He begets not, nor is He begotten; and there is none like unto Him." (Al-Qur'an; Surah Al-Ikhlas; Ayat 1-4)
"The RaHmān (ALLAH, the All-Merciful) has positioned Himself on the Throne." (Al-Qur'an; Surah Ta-Ha; Ayat 5)
"He is the One who created the heavens and the earth in six days, while His throne was on water, so that He might test you as to who among you is better in deed. And if you say, 'You shall be raised after death,' the disbelievers will surely say, 'This is nothing but sheer magic.' " (Al-Qur'an; Surah Hud; Ayat 7)
"Truly, the religion (way of life) with ALLAH is Islam (i.e. submission to the Will of ALLAH)." (Al-Qur'an; Surah Aal 'Imran; Ayat 18)
".....Today, I (ALLAH) have perfected your religion for you, and have completed My blessing upon you, and chosen Islam (i.e. submission to the Will of ALLAH) as Dīn (religion and a way of life) for you....." (Al-Qur'an; Surah Al-Ma'idah; Ayat 3)
"And whomever seeks a religion (way of life) other than Islam (i.e. submission to the Will of ALLAH), it will never be accepted of him." (Al-Qur'an; Surah Aal 'Imran; Ayat 85)
"Say (O! Muhammad [صلى الله عليه وسلم] to mankind): 'If you (really) love ALLAH, then follow me (i.e. accept Islamic Monotheism, and follow the Qur'an and Sunnah), ALLAH will love you and forgive you your sins. And ALLAH is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.'" (Al-Qur'an; Surah Aal 'Imran; Ayat 31)
"And whatsoever the Messenger (Muhammad [صلى الله عليه وسلم]) gives you, take it, and whatever he forbids you, abstain (from it)." (Al-Qur'an; Surah Al-Hashr; Ayat 7)
"Nor does he (Muhammad [صلى الله عليه وسلم]) speak of his own desire. It is only an inspiration that is inspired. He (Muhammad [صلى الله عليه وسلم]) has been taught (this Qur'an) by one mighty in power (Jibril)." (Al-Qur'an; Surah An-Najm; Ayat 3-5)
"Say (O! Muhammad [صلى الله عليه وسلم]: 'Obey ALLAH and obey the Messenger (Muhammad [صلى الله عليه وسلم].' But if you turn away, then ALLAH loves not the disbelievers." (Al-Qur'an; Surah Aal 'Imran; Ayat 32)
"O! You who believe! Obey ALLAH and obey the Messenger (Muhammad [صلى الله عليه وسلم]) and those among you who are in authority. And if you differ in anything among yourselves, then refer it to ALLAH and His Messenger (Muhammad [صلى الله عليه وسلم]), if you believe in ALLAH and the Last Day. That is better and more suitable for final determination." (Al-Qur'an; Surah An-Nisa'; Ayat 59)
"He who obeys the Messenger (Muhammad [صلى الله عليه وسلم] has indeed obeyed ALLAH, but he who turns away, then We have not sent you (O! Muhammad [صلى الله عليه وسلم]) as a watcher over them." (Al-Qur'an; Surah An-Nisa'; Ayat 80)
"As for the first and foremost of the Emigrants (Muhājirīn) and the Supporters (AnSār) and those who followed them in goodness, Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Allah, and He has prepared for them gardens beneath which rivers flow, where they will live for ever. That is the supreme achievement." (Al-Qur'an; Surah At-Taubah; Ayat 100)
"Whoever breaks away from the Messenger after the right path has become clear to him, and follows what is not the way of the believers, We shall let him have what he chose, and We shall admit him to Hell [Jahannam], which is an evil place to return." (Al-Qur'an; Surah An-Nisa; Ayat 115)
"In the name of ALLAH, The Most Beneficent, The Most Merciful; Praise be to ALLAH, the Lord of the Universe; The Most Gracious, The Most Merciful; Master of the Day of Judgment; You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help; Guide us to the straight path, the path of those whom You have favoured, not of those who have deserved Your anger, nor of those who stray."
